“Bee Orchids challenge the nature of species”

Bee orchids are unusually charismatic plants – their complex appearance and sexually deceptive pollination mechanism inevitably renders them charismatic foci for botanical conservation programmes, especially in the Mediterranean region. However, opinions on the number of species that should be recognised within the genus Ophrys vary from nine to at least 300! This extraordinary disparity reflects radical differences in both the (often implicit rather than explicit) species concepts and the analytical approaches chosen by competing researchers attempting to address this fundamental question.
