“The community of mediterranean region ecologists has lost a powerful and influential voice with the death of Nikos Margaris, Professor at the University of the Aegean. His vision and leadership in the 1980s was critical in focusing international attention on issues of the ecology, biodiversity and conservation of the world’s five mediterranean-climate regions. These efforts resulted in the publication of a series of important edited volumes. In addition to his scientific research and publications over a long career, Nikos played an important role in bringing public attention to issues of conservation through his work with the media and position as Director of National Geographic GREECE. His presence will be
deeply missed”.

“All of us in the global community who study the unique characteristics of the ecosystems of the mediterranean climate regions of world mourn the death of Nikos Margaris. He served as a wonderful model of a scientist who not only contributed new findings on these systems but also was a leading conservation biologist who worked tirelessly to bring knowledge of the natural world to the general public. I met Nikos early in my career and he certainly was an inspiration for me on the need of doing good science and sharing it with your colleagues but also to go that further crucial step of bringing science to the policy and public realm in order to achieve a more sustainable world.”

Paul S. Achilles Professor of Environmental Biology, Emeritus- Stanford University, U.S.A.
