Ανάλυση Οικολογικών Δεδομένων, Μυτιλήνη, 10-15 Ιουλίου, 2017.

Η Σχολή Περιβάλλοντος του Πανεπιστημίου Αιγαίου και το Ινστιτούτο Θαλάσσιας Βιολογίας, Βιοτεχνολογίας και Υδατοκαλλιεργειών του Ελληνικού Κέντρου Θαλασσίων Ερευνών διοργάνωσαν, για τέταρτη φορά, Διεθνές Θερινό Σχολείο στην Ανάλυση Οικολογικών Δεδομένων EcoDAR2017 στη Μυτιλήνη.

Με βάση την εμπειρία της, κατά γενική ομολογία, επιτυχημένης διοργάνωσης του EcoDAR2013 και του EcoDAR2015 στη Μυτιλήνη, και του EcoDAR2014 στο Ηράκλειο Κρήτης,, το Θερινό Σχολείο αποσκοπούσε φέτος στο να αναδείξει τη σημασία της ποσοτικής προσέγγισης στην ερμηνεία της πολυπλοκότητας των φυσικών συστημάτων και στην επίλυση των προβλημάτων στην επιστήμη της Οικολογίας. Το Θερινό Σχολείο απευθυνόταν σε τελειόφοιτους, μεταπτυχιακούς φοιτητές, υποψήφιους διδάκτορες και ερευνητές από την ευρύτερη επιστημονική περιοχή της Οικολογίας.

Στα πλαίσια του Θερινού Σχολείου παρουσιάστηκε ένα μεγάλο φάσμα κλασικών και σύγχρονων στατιστικών μεθόδων, μέσω της εφαρμογής τους στην αντιμετώπιση σύγχρονων οικολογικών ζητημάτων. Ως εργαλείο ανάλυσης δεδομένων χρησιμοποιήθηκε η ευρύτατα διαδεδομένη και συνεχώς εξελισσόμενη γλώσσα προγραμματισμού R. Στην πρωτοβουλία αυτή δίδαξαν διεθνώς διακεκριμένοι επιστήμονες στην ανάλυση οικολογικών δεδομένων και στη στατιστική οικολογία. Συμμετείχαν 24 επιστήμονες από την Ελλάδα, την Κύπρο, τη Σβολακία, την Αγγλία, το Ισραήλ και τη Γερμανία. Το Θερινό Σχολείο τελούσε υπό την αιγίδα της Ελληνικής Οικολογικής Εταιρείας. Οι επιστημονικά υπεύθυνοι του Θερινού Σχολείου ήταν οι: Γιώργος Κόκκορης, Επίκουρος Καθηγητής του Τμήματος Επιστημών της Θάλασσας και Παναγιώτης Δημητρακόπουλος, Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής του Τμήματος Περιβάλλοντος.

Θερινό Σχολείο για τη Βιολογία Διατήρησης. Summer School in Conservation Biology. (πραγματοποιείται για ένατη χρονιά στα Ζαγοροχώρια)

Το Θερινό Σχολείο για τη Βιολογία Διατήρησης πραγματοποιείται από το 2008 στα βουνά της Ηπείρου (στο Πάπιγκο μέχρι το 2012, και στα Άνω Πεδινά έκτοτε). Στο διάστημα αυτό, έχει εμπνεύσει πάνω από 120 φοιτητές να ανακαλύψουν την βιοποικιλότητα και την έρευνα που σχετίζεται με αυτήν. Η εκπαίδευση των φοιτητών συμπεριλαμβάνει τόσο διαλέξεις και εργαστήρια υπολογιστών (με χρήση R για ανάλυση δεδομένων) όσο και εργασία στο πεδίο με δειγματοληψία βιοποικιλότητας. Η διάρκεια του σχολείου είναι 12 ημέρες (26 Ιουνίου ως 7 Ιουλίου 2017) και τελεί υπό την αιγίδα της Διεθνούς Εταιρείας της Βιολογίας Διατήρησης (Society for Conservation Biology) και της Ελληνικής Οικολογικής Εταιρείας. Το θερινό σχολείο λειτουργεί με την υποστήριξη του Πανεπιστημίου Ιωαννίνων, που είναι το ίδρυμα υποδοχής, στο σταθμό έρευνας πεδίου που διαθέτει, στα Άνω Πεδινά (ΠΑΛΑΣΕ).

Η εστίαση του Θερινού Σχολείου είναι στις μεθόδους πεδίου για τη μελέτη της βιοποικιλότητας, στη θεωρία της βιοποικιλότητας, καθώς και στις μεθόδους για την ανάλυση των δεδομένων (κυρίως με χρήση R). Τόσο η ομάδα των εκπαιδευτών όσο και των φοιτητών είναι διεθνής, από πολλές διαφορετικές περιοχές του πλανήτη.

Η περίοδος υποβολής αιτήσεων έχει ξεκινήσει, και δεχόμαστε αιτήσεις από ενδιαφερόμενους φοιτητές μέχρι τις 10 Μαΐου 2017. Για περισσότερες πληροφορίες επισκεφθείτε την ιστοσελίδα του θερινού σχολείου.

The School of Environment of the University of the Aegean and the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture of the Hellenic Centre of Marine Research co-organize for the fourth year, EcoDAR2017, an International Summer School in Ecological Data Analysis at Mytilene, Lesvos Island, Greece. This year, drawing on the experience of the very successful EcoDAR2013 and EcoDAR2015 that were organized in Mytilene, and EcoDAR2014 that was organized in Heraklion, Crete, it aims to highlight the importance of the quantitative approach to the interpretation of the complexity of natural systems and in solving ecological problems. The Summer School would be appealing to advanced undergraduate, postgraduate, Ph.D. students and researchers in Ecology. A wide range of classical and modern statistical techniques will be presented and applied to contemporary environmental issues. The data analysis tools that will be employed will be the widespread and constantly evolving programming language R. Lectures will be accompanied by practical sessions to help participants to gain a better feeling of the software. This initiative will bring together internationally renowned scientists in the analysis of ecological data and mathematical ecology, to teach this subject. The tuition fee is €350. The number of participants is limited to 30 people. Registration deadline: May 5, 2017. Early registration is encouraged since the selection procedure is an ongoing procedure. The Summer School is held under the auspices of the Hellenic Ecological Society.

Biodiversity Theory and Practice. Zagori, Greece, 29rd June - 10th July, 2015

This school continues the series of Greek Summer Schools in Conservation Biology that began in 2008 but will be of a more quantitative nature and will focus on biodiversity. GSS-2015 will be under the aegis of the Society for Conservation Biology and of HELECOS. We aim to equip participants with an understanding of the principles of modern biodiversity theory and to teach practical skills for biodiversity fieldwork including sampling design and monitoring. Students will also learn how to use some of the main computer packages for biodiversity data analysis, mainly in the R programming environment. The duration is 12 days. The course is worth 6 ECTS and is aimed at postgraduate students; applicants with good quantitative skills are especially welcome. The fee* of 700€ covers registration, food, accommodation and local transport. The number of participants is limited to 15. GSS-2015 will be held at the PALASE Field Station of the University of Ioannina in Ano Pedina (central Zagori). As familiarity with R is essential, we offer a special two-day refresher course (27th-28th June) prior to the start of the school for those wishing to ‘brush up’ on R.
